Centuries ago, Welshmen courted their women-folk by carving a lovespoon from the bough of a tree. They were meticulous over the intricate detail of the carving, as each symbol carved had a specific meaning.

Then they would give this lovespoon to a young desirable woman, hoping for her acceptance. If the woman accepted the gift, the couple were betrothed, equivalent of today's engagement.

Today, lovespoons are given as a love token, as a mark of affection, or merely as a sign of friendship, where a little bit of love goes a long, long way.
They are typically given at weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, engagements, as Christmas gifts and, of course, on Valentine's Day !
